Autotrophy is a type of mode of nutrition where organisms synthesize their food. The organisms use inorganic molecules like carbon dioxide, water, or they oxidize compounds like ammonia, nitrites, or sulfur to generate energy in the form of food. The organisms are known as autotrophs, and they do not depend on other organisms for their food. Autotrophy is categorized into two main types based on the source of energy used for food synthesis:

  1. Photoautotrophy- They use light energy (from the Sun) to carry out photosynthesis. Example: Green plants, algae, and cyanobacteria.
  2. Chemoautotrophy- They obtain energy from chemical reactions involving inorganic substances. Example - Ammonia oxidation by Nitrosomonas.
