Under is used when something is directly under another. It means in, to, or through a lower place/ position.

E.g : My cat used to sleep under my bed but she is grown too big to do that.
 

Underneath is often refers to under something used when being covered or hidden by another thing.
E.g:

The jacket is too small for me to wear a jumper underneath
