According to Shylock Antonio hated his sacred nation and in presence of other merchants talked ill of him. He disliked Shylock's religion by calling him a disbeliever. He abused the Jew saying that the latter was a cut throat dog. He even spit on Shylock's gaberdine. Then Antonio not only healed insults on the Jew, but also tried to cause damage to his business reputation. Shylock bore these indignities calmly , but resolved to seek an opportunity to hit back.
