A child stands on the edge of the cliff 10 m above the ground and throws a stone horizontally with an initial speed of 5 ms^{-1} . Neglecting the air resistance, the speed with which the stone hits the ground will be ms^{-1}  (given, g = 10 ms^{-2} ).

\begin{aligned} & \mathrm{u}_{\mathrm{y}}=0 \\ & \mathrm{a}_{\mathrm{y}}=+\mathrm{g} \\ & \mathrm{v}_{\mathrm{y}}=? \\ &\end{aligned}                                      \begin{aligned} v_y^2 & =u_y^2+2 a_y g_y \\ & =(0)^2+2 \times 10 \times 10 \\ v_y^2 & =200 \end{aligned}

\begin{aligned} & \mathrm{~s}_y=10 \mathrm{~m} \\ & \mathrm{v}_{\mathrm{y}}^2=200 \\ & \therefore \quad \mathrm{v}=\sqrt{\mathrm{v}_x^2+\mathrm{v}_y^2} \\ & =\sqrt{25+200}=\sqrt{225} \\ & =15 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s} \end{aligned}
