Consider the following reactions of  \mathrm{NaH_2PO_4 }

\mathrm{(i)\ NaH_2PO_4 + NaOH \longrightarrow Na_2HPO_4 + H_2O}

\mathrm{(ii)\ NaH_2PO_4 + HCl \longrightarrow H_3PO_4 + NaCl}

In the reactions (i) and (ii) respectively, the behaviour of \mathrm{NaH_2PO_4 } is

Option: 1

Acidic in both

Option: 2

Basic in both

Option: 3

Acidic, Basic

Option: 4

Basic, Acidic

Answers (1)

best_answer

\mathrm{(i)\ NaH_2PO_4 + NaOH \longrightarrow Na_2HPO_4 + H_2O}

In the first reaction, \mathrm{NaH_2PO_4 } loses a proton, and hence it acts as an acid

\mathrm{(ii)\ NaH_2PO_4 + HCl \longrightarrow H_3PO_4 + NaCl}

In the second reaction, \mathrm{NaH_2PO_4 } accepts a proton and hence it acts as a base

Hence, the correct answer is Option (3)
