Body Organization in Platyhelminthes -

  • Since the platyhelminthes are triploblastic and acoelomate, their body plan shows the following details:
  • The outermost layer called the epidermis is derived from the ectoderm. The ectoderm is syncytial, i.e., it is a single layer of fused cells.
  • The epidermis is followed by circular and longitudinal muscles that are derived from the mesoderm. Below the muscles, mesenchymal cells and secretory cells are present. Mesenchymal cells contain collagen and secretory cells secrete mucus to support other tissues. Together, they constitute parenchyma.
  • The parenchyma is followed by the digestive tract which is derived from the endoderm.
