Basidiomycetes (Club fungi) -

  • Sexual reproduction is by somatogamy between cells of monokaryotic mycelium of opposite strains. It results in the formation of dikaryotic mycelium which gives rise to basidium.
  • In the basidium karyogamy takes place. The diploid nucleus undergoes meiosis and later basidiospores are formed exogenously on the basidium.
  • The fruiting body of basidiomycetes is called basidiocarp.
