Galactose is the only sugar that possesses a free aldehyde functional group. Gluconic acid, although containing an aldehyde group, is an oxidized form of glucose and is not classified as reducing sugar. Similarly, p-methyl galactoside is a modified form of galactose and does not have a free aldehyde or ketone group
