\mathrm{Mg} resembles in chemical properties, with its diagonally placed lithium in group 1 of the periodic table because they have a similar size. Boron is smaller than \mathrm{Mg} and hence, does not show diagonal relationship.

Magnesium reacts vigorously with steam but slow reaction takes place with water.

Across the period, the nuclear charge increases which held the electrons firmly with the nucleus. Hence it is difficult to remove an electron across the period. Therefore, Sodium is more electropositive than magnesium.

It has only two valencec shell electrons. Hence, it act as a strong reducing agent by donating it valence electrons and tend to attain noble gas configuration.
