On reaction of \mathrm{MgCl}_{2} and \mathrm{CaCl}_{2} with ammonium carbonates form respective carbonates which are insoluble.

\mathrm{CaCl}_{2}+\left(\mathrm{NH}_{4}\right)_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaCO}_{3}+2 \mathrm{NH}_{4} \mathrm{Cl}
\mathrm{MgCl}_{2}+\left(\mathrm{NH}_{4}\right)_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3} \rightarrow \mathrm{MgCO}_{3}+2 \mathrm{NH}_{4} \mathrm{Cl}

Then the ammoniated brine is filtered to remove Ca and Mg impurites as insoluble carbonates.
