Characteristics of kingdom Monera -
- Kingdom Monera includes most abundant organisms that are found in a variety of habitats.
- They are unicellular and prokaryotic organisms.
- They lack a true nucleus bounded by a nuclear membrane and nucleolus instead they have naked circular DNA folded to form nucleoid.
- Monerans possess naked DNA and RNA not associated with proteins
- The cell wall is made up of peptidoglycan
- Membrane-bound cell organelles like mitochondria, Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticulum etc are absent in monerans
- Ribosome of 70 S type is present in these organisms.
- Reproduction in these organisms mainly occurs by asexual means i.e. binary fission, endospore production etc.
- Monerans can be autotrophic, saprotrophic, parasitic and chemoautotrophic.
- Major groups of Monera
