Simple Permanent Tissues: Collenchyma
- Collenchyma is the simple permanent tissue having more or less elongated cells with the primary non-lignified cell wall.
- Their cell walls are their distinctive features that show uneven thickening.
- They have a highly vacuolated cytoplasm.
- These are effective mechanical tissues and provide elasticity to the plant parts.
- They show a unique pattern of distribution as follows:
- Present only in dicots
- Present only in the shoot
- Present only in the hypodermis
- Never present in monocots
- Never present in roots
- Never present in underground stem
- They have a polygonal shape.
- These are the living tissues in the plant body.
Types of Collenchyma: Based on the thickening patterns, there are the following types of collenchyma:
- Angular collenchyma: They have thickenings on angles between the cells.
- Lamellar collenchyma: They have thickenings on tangential walls.
- Lacunar collenchyma: They have thickenings on walls facing the intercellular spaces.

Functions of Collenchyma:
- Provide mechanical support to petiole, pedicels, branches of stem, roots and fruits.
- If they contain chlorophyll they help in photosynthesis.
