Vertebral Column (Backbone) -

  • Our vertebral column is formed by 26 serially arranged units called vertebrae and is dorsally placed.
  • It is actually made up of 33 vertebrae.
  • However, it consists of 26 bones because five sacral vertebrae are fused to form one sacrum and four coccygeal vertebrae are fused to form one coccyx.
  • It extends from the base of the skull and constitutes the main framework of the trunk.
  • Each vertebra has a central hollow portion (neural canal) through which the spinal cord passes.
  • The vertebral column is differentiated into:
    • cervical (7)
    • thoracic (12)
    • lumbar (5)
    • sacral (1; 5 fused)
    • coccygeal (1; 4 fused)

 Lumbar Vertebrae:

  • These are 5 in number present in the abdomen.
  • They are the largest and strongest in the vertebral column.
  • Their processes are short and thick.
  • The spinous processes are thick and broad and project posteriorly.

Hence, the correct option is b. abdominal region
