Platyhelminthes are triploblastic animals, i.e., the embryo shows the arrangement of three germ layers as ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. These are acoelomate. The space between ectoderm and endoderm is filled with mesodermal tissue called parenchyma. They show bilateral symmetry. They are the first animals to show a degree of cephalization.  They show organ level of body organization. They are mostly parasitic. Some free-living forms are aquatic.
