The Castner-Kellner cell uses an electrolyte of sodium chloride solution, a graphite anode (A), and a mercury cathode (M).

2 \mathrm{Na}^{+}+2 \mathrm{e}^{-} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{Na} \text { [Cathode] }

\mathrm{Na}+\mathrm{Hg} \rightarrow \mathrm{Na}-\mathrm{Hg} \text { [Amalgam] }
