The characteristic feature of VAM is that it penetrates plant cell wall and form
Spores intracellularly
Haustoria
Vesicle and dichotomously branched invaginations called arbuscules.
Massive sporangia
Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) is formed by the symbiotic association between certain phycomycetes fungi and angiospermic roots. The fungus colonizes the root cortex forming a mycelial network and characterstic vesicles (bladder-like structures) and arbuscules (branched finger like hyphae).
The arbuscules are the most characterstic structures, formed intracellularly and probably having an absorptive function. The vesicles are terminal swellings of hyphae formed inter and intercellularly having a storage function.
