Regulation of Respiration -

  • The respiratory centre is composed of groups of neurons located in the medulla oblongata and pons varolii.
  • Therefore, the respiratory centre is divided into medullary and pons respiratory centres.
  • Excess CO2 or hydrogen ions stimulate the respiratory centres of the brain and increase the inspiratory and expiratory signals to the respiratory muscles.

Medullary Respiratory Centres:

  • Dorsal Respiratory Centres (DRC): It is located in the dorsal portion of the medulla oblongata. It causes inspiration.
  • Ventral Respiratory Centres (VRC): It can cause both inspiration and expiration.
