Thorns:

  • The axillary buds of the stem can be modified to form straight, pointed, woody and hard structures called thorns.
  • It arises in the axil of the leaf.
  • They protect plants from grazing animals.
  • These are found in Citrus, Bougainvillea etc.


 

 

Prickles are superficial (exogenous origin) outgrowths in any part of stem, branch, leaf and do not have vascular supply. Thorns are modified stem and differ from spines and prickles in having vascular supply, endogenous origin and bark, for example, Bougainvillea, Carissa and Duranta.
