Respiration is the term used to describe the general procedure of exchanging gases, particularly oxygen and carbon dioxide, between the organism and its environment. In regard to the lungs and blood during respiration, there are two distinct processes called internal and external respiration.

In the lungs, external respiration takes place as oxygen from the air that has been inhaled diffuses through the respiratory membrane into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide from the blood flows into the alveoli for exhalation. The tiny air sacs in the lungs called alveoli are where this exchange occurs.

On the other hand, cellular-level internal respiration occurs. After the circulatory system has delivered oxygen-rich blood to the body's tissues and organs, oxygen diffuses from the capillaries and enters the cells. Simultaneously, the circulation carries carbon dioxide created by cellular metabolism out of the cells and back to the lungs for removal

Therefore, the complete process of gas exchange between the lungs and blood, as well as between the blood and bodily tissues, is referred to as respiration.

Hence, the correct answer is option 2
