All alkaline earth metals form hydrides on reacting with \mathrm{H}_{2} except Beryllium. This is due to the less electropositive character of Beryllium as compared to other alkali earth metals.

As we move down the group, the electropositive character increases hence other alkaline earth metals forms hydride.

\mathrm{M} \quad+\quad \mathrm{H}_{2} \rightarrow \mathrm{MH}_{2}

Where, \mathrm{M}=\mathrm{Mg}$, $\mathrm{Ca}, \mathrm{Sr}, \mathrm{Ba}
