Flame test is used to identify the metal by their characteristic colour while heating in an oxidising flame.

The heat from the flame excites the outer electron to higher energy level and when those electrons come back to their ground state, they emit the absorbed energy where these radiation in visible region shows characteristic colour
 In the flame test,

\mathrm{LiCl} gives crimson red colour

\mathrm{MgCl}_2 gives no colour in flame test

\mathrm{KCl} gives violet colour

\mathrm{BaCl}_2 gives pale green colour
