Compounds of alkaline earth metals are more extensively hydrated than those of alkali metals. The size of alkaline earth metal ions is lower than the size of alkali metal ions. The lower the size of the cation, the higher is the hydration energy. So, the salts of alkaline earth metals have more water molecules of crystallization than those of alkali metals.

\mathrm{MgCl}_2 and \mathrm{CaCl}_2 exist as \mathrm{MgCl}_2 \cdot 6 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} and \mathrm{CaCl}_2 \cdot 6 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} . \mathrm{NaCl} and \mathrm{KCl} do not form such hydrates.
