\mathrm{Be}(\mathrm{OH})_{2} is amphoteric in nature whereas \mathrm{Ba}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}, \operatorname{Sr}(\mathrm{OH})_{2} and \mathrm{Ca}(\mathrm{OH})_{2} are basic in nature. The amphoteric nature of \mathrm{Be}(\mathrm{OH})_{2} is due to smaller size and high ionisation energy of Beryllium.

\mathrm{Be}(\mathrm{OH})_{2} react with both acid as well base.

\mathrm{Be}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}+2 \mathrm{NaOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{BeO}_{2}+2 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}
\mathrm{Be}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}+2 \mathrm{HCl} \rightarrow \mathrm{BeCl}_{2}+2 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}
