Calcium carbonate \mathrm{CaCO}_{3} is a white fluffy powder which is water insoluble.

It can be obtained by the addition of sodium carbonate solution to \mathrm{CaCl}_{2}.
\mathrm{CaCl}_{2}+\mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{CO}_{3} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaCO}_{3}+2 \mathrm{NaCl}

Calcium carbonate can also be obtained by passing carbon dioxide through slaked lime.
\mathrm{Ca}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}+\mathrm{CO}_{2} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaCO}_{3}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}

Excess of \mathrm{CO_{2}} leads to the formation of water soluble \mathrm{Ca}\left(\mathrm{HCO}_{3}\right)_{2}.
