Which among the following is correct statement with respect to first ionization potentials (I.E.) ?
(a) I.E. of Be is more than I.E. of Boron.
(b) I.E. of Be is less than I.E. of Boron.
(c) I.E. of Nitrogen is less than I.E. of Oxygen.
(d) I.E. of Nitrogen is more than I.E. of Oxygen.
a only
a and c only
b only
a and d only
As we move from left to right across a period, the ionisation energy increases with decrease in size. However, Be and N is exception to this rule.
I.E. of B is less than I.E. of Be: When Be loses an electron, it is removed from a fully filled 2s sub-shell hence it becomes difficult to remove the electron, whereas B gives its lone 2p electron. Hence extra-stability of fully filled sub-shell is the cause of this irregularity.
I.E. of O is less than I.E. of N: Half filled (2p3) outer most sub-shell of N is highly stable and hence it becomes difficult to remove the electron. Thus, extra-stability of half filled sub-shells is the cause of irregularity.
