In Castner-Kellner cell, mercury is used as cathode and it flows along the bottom of the cell. The brine solution flows in the same direction as that of mercury and on reaction with mercury, it forms mercury amalgam.

Mercury amalgam on reacting with water gives \mathrm{NaOH}, \mathrm{Hg} and \mathrm{H}_2 .

2 \mathrm{NaHg}+2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{NaOH}+2 \mathrm{Hg}+\mathrm{H}_2

\mathrm{Hg} is re-circulated to the cell for cyclic process. \mathrm{Cl}_2 gas is liberated from the anode. Hence, \mathrm{H}_2 and \mathrm{Cl}_2 were the useful by-products of the reaction.
