Glandular Epithelium -

  • Glands can be defined as the modified cells that can synthesize and secrete chemical substances. 
  • Epithelial cells form the multicellular exocrine glands that line the cavity of the abdomen and chest.

Based on the mode of secretion, the exocrine glands can be classified as follows:

1. Merocrine glands: The secretions are present within the vesicles that move to the apical surface of the cells and secretions are released through the exocytosis. For example, sweat glands.

2. Apocrine glands: The secretions accumulate near the apical surface of the cell. This portion along with the secretion pinches off and secretion is released. For example, mammary glands.

3. Holocrine glands: It involves the rupture of the entire cell. The secretion is released when the cell bursts. For example, sebaceous glands.
