Tadpole is a free-swimming tunicate larva with a tadpole-like tail that contains the notochord and nerve cord. While the notochord is retained by adults of the lower vertebrates of class Agnatha, it is replaced by the vertebral column in higher vertebrates. In humans, it is present in the early stages and is later replaced by a backbone.
