Tetrachloroethene was used as a solvent for cleaning; it contaminates groundwater and is suspected to be a carcinogen. It is now replaced with liquified CO_2 since it will be less harmful to the groundwater. Nowadays, H_{2}O_{2} is used for bleaching, which gives better results and requires a lesser amount of water.
