(a) Bosch process : In this method, water gas is mixed with twice its volume of steam and passed over heated catalyst  \mathrm{Fe}_2 \mathrm{O}_3  in the presence of a promoter  \mathrm{Cr}_2 \mathrm{O}_3  or  \mathrm{ThO}_2  at  773 \mathrm{~K}  when  \mathrm{CO}_2  and  \mathrm{H}_2  are obtained.  \mathrm{CO}_2   is removed by dissolving it in water under pressure (20-25 atm) and  \mathrm{H}_2  left undissolved is collected.

\begin{aligned} & \mathrm{C}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \stackrel{1270 \mathrm{~K}}{\longrightarrow} \underbrace{\mathrm{CO}+\mathrm{H}_2}_{\text {Watergas }} \\ & \mathrm{H}_2+\mathrm{CO}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \underset{\mathrm{Fe}_2 \mathrm{O}_3, \mathrm{Cr}_2 \mathrm{O}_3}{\stackrel{773 \mathrm{~K}}{\longrightarrow}} \mathrm{CO}_2+2 \mathrm{H}_2 \end{aligned}
