Anion exchange resins. These resins contain basic groups such as \mathrm{{OH}^{-}} ions usually in the form of substituted ammonium hydroxides attached to giant hydrocarbon frame work (R).
These may be represented by the general formula \mathrm{R}-\stackrel{+}{\mathrm{N}} \mathrm{H}_3 \mathrm{OH}^{-}. Since these resins can exchange ions with anions such as \mathrm{Cl}^{-}$and $\mathrm{SO}_4{ }^{2-} ions present in hard water, water becomes free from anions by treatment with anion exchangers.
