Oxidation of an element means removal of an electron or increase in its oxidation state. When hydrogen reacts with Oxygen or Sulphur, it oxidises to \mathrm{H}^{+}\, ion and reduces them to \mathrm{O}^{2-} or  \mathrm{S}^{2-} ion.
But when hydrogen reacts with alkali metals or alkali earth metals, hydrogen reduces to hydride ion \left(\mathrm{H}^{-}\right) and oxidises them to their respective oxidation states. Hence, Calcium and Lithium shall oxidize on reaction with hydrogen.
