Covalent hydrides are compounds of hydrogen and non-metals due to their similarity in electronegativity. As non-metals are present in p-block, hence p-block elements form covalent hydrides.

Ionic hydrides are formed when hydrogen reacts with highly electropositive s-block elements except \mathrm{Be} and \mathrm{Mg}. In \mathrm{BeH}_2 \, \&\, \mathrm{MgH}_2, the size of cation \mathrm{Be}^{2+} and \mathrm{Mg}^{2+} is small and relatively high charge ion. Thus, it has a high polarising power. This gives significant covalent character to \mathrm{BeH}_2 \, \, \& \, \, \mathrm{MgH}_2.

Hence, (1) is incorrect.
