If the boy is whirling a stone tied with a string in a horizontal circular path, the force by string is changing the direction of velocity.  This force is called Centripetal force.

If the string breaks, there will be no force to change the direction of velocity.

Therefore, the particle will move on a straight line, tangent to the circle with speed it had just before the breaking of string.
