(a) Depletion of ozone is mainly due to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These are synthetic chemicals that are used as refrigerants and in fire extinguishers. Ozone is a stable molecule but the presence of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere has led to the ozone hole as it converts ozone molecules to oxygen. The prevalent use of chlorofluorocarbons has led to an ozone hole near the poles.

Therefore option (A) is correct
