Why do we have different units for the same physical quantity?

(ii) The radius of a nucleus is measured in fermi. The distance between stars is measured in light-years. The length of cloth is measured in metres, while the distance between two cities is measured in kilometres or miles. Depending on the physical quantity to be measured, the units also vary.
