Biopiracy is the use of bio-resources by MNCs and other organizations without authorization from the countries and people. Some MNCs make some minor tweaks to get the patent on products or processes that have been under the domain of traditional knowledge of any country. 

Exploitation of Developing Nations:

  1. Unauthorized Use of Resources: Developed nations often capitalize on the biodiversity of developing countries by patenting plants, traditional crops, and other natural materials without offering proper acknowledgment or compensation.

  2. Inequitable Trade Systems: Developing nations are subjected to unfair trade practices where their raw resources are acquired cheaply, while finished goods are sold back to them at significantly higher prices.

  3. Erosion of Indigenous Knowledge: Traditional wisdom maintained by local communities is often taken without credit, resulting in cultural and intellectual exploitation.

  4. Environmental Impact: Excessive extraction of natural resources by foreign corporations leads to ecological damage, including deforestation, habitat loss, and a decline in biodiversity.

  5. Widening Economic Gaps: The financial gains from resource exploitation are largely retained by developed nations, leaving developing countries in poverty and with limited access to the wealth generated from their resources.
