Find the value of the polynomial 3x^{3} - 4x^{2} + 7x - 5, when x = 3 and also when x = – 3.

Solution.        

Here the given polynomial is p(x) = 3x3 – 4x2 + 7x – 5

Put x = 3 in given polynomial we get

p(3) = 3(3)3 – 4(3)2 + 7(3) – 5

        = 81 – 36 + 21 – 5

        = 45 + 16

        = 61

Put x = – 3 in given polynomial we get

p(-3) = 3(–3)3 – 4(–3)2 + 7(–3) – 5

        = –81 – 36 – 21 – 5

        = – 117 – 26

        = – 143
