Before the advent of rDNA technology, Insulin was mainly obtained from the pancreas of slaughtered animals. This often resulted in unwanted side effects on the users such as -

Allergic Reactions: Insulin derived from animals sometimes triggers allergic responses in patients because of slight structural differences between animal insulin and human insulin.

Cost and Ethical Concerns: The extraction of animal insulin was expensive and brought up ethical issues related to the widespread killing of animals for medical use.
