Nitrogenase is highly sensitive to oxygen and hence require an anaerobic condition to function. Leghaemoglobin acts as an oxygen scavenger and protects the nitrogenase enzyme from oxygen. Thus, creating anaerobic conditions in the root nodules of legumes.
