Discuss the significance of heavy isotope of nitrogen in the Meselson and Stahl's experiment.

Answers (1)

The heavy isotope of nitrogen was used in Meselson and Stahl's experiment for various reasons. The heavy DNA molecule (containing 15N) could be easily distinguished from the normal DNA by centrifugation in a Cesium chloride (CsCI) density gradient. It could be easily separated from lighter nitrogen (14N) on the basis of density. Use of lighter and heavier nitrogen made the task of identifying the transfer of DNAs through subsequent generation quite easier.
