In the following circuits (Figure 12.2), heat produced in the resistor or combination of resistors connected to a 12 V battery will be

Hence, the correct answer is option (d).

Explanation:-
(i) If resistors are connected in series, the total resistance increases. As a result, the current decreases, and less heat is produced.

Net resistance, R_{1}=2\Omega
(ii) If resistors are connected in parallel, the total resistance decreases. This leads to an increase in current, and more heat is produced.

Net resistance, R_{2} = (2 + 2) \Omega (In series)
R_{2} = 4 \Omega
(iii) Net resistance, 1/R_{3} = (1/2 + 1/2) \Omega (In parallel)
R_{3} = 1 \Omega
As we know the heat produced is inversely proportional to the resistance.
So, the heat produced will be maximum in (iii) and minimum in (ii)
Therefore, option (d) is correct.
