Smaller lipid-soluble molecules diffuse faster through the cell membrane, but the movement of hydrophilic substances is facilitated by certain transporters, which are chemically polymers of amino acids. The diffusion of any substance across a membrane is, dependent on its solubility in the membrane's lipids. The plasma membrane is a bilayer lipid membrane containing integral and peripheral proteins. Hydrophilic substances cannot pass through the membrane easily so their movement has to be facilitated. This process is called facilitated diffusion.
