During the light reaction of photosynthesis, ATP is synthesized. During ATP synthesis, the movement of ions occurs across the semi-permeable membrane of the thylakoid. The proton pump pushes the ions with the help of a proton gradient. This further synthesizes the ATP molecules. Since this process is a chemical- mediated phenomenon, ATP synthesis is often termed as a chemiosmotic phenomenon.
