Lifestyle diseases are increasing alarmingly in India. We are also dealing with large-scale malnutrition in the population. Is there any method by which we can address both of these problems together?

Lack of a balanced diet is the root cause of all lifestyle diseases and malnutrition. A person who takes a carbohydrate and fat-rich diet and ignores protein, vitamins, and minerals is more likely to suffer from lifestyle diseases. Malnutrition happens because of the lack of nutrients in the diet. Some methods to tackle these problems are as follows:

  • Ensuring the availability of all kinds of food (regarding available nutrients) is one way of tackling these problems.
  • Another solution to address both of these issues is biofortification. This approach focuses on enhancing the nutritional quality of food by increasing its protein, oil, vitamin, micronutrient, and mineral content. For example, oils should be rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health. Similarly, proteins should be enhanced with essential amino acids like lysine and tryptophan. Several varieties of maize, carrots, and spinach have been developed and released to meet these nutritional criteria.
