Millions of chicken were killed in West Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Maharashtra recently. What was the reason?
A recent outbreak of bird flu, also known as avian influenza, caused by the H5N1 strain of the flu virus killed millions of hens in West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, and Maharashtra. Poultry and other birds, including ostriches, pet birds, and migratory aquatic birds, are the main victims of this viral respiratory illness, however people can also contract it. Because severe cases of the infection can cause acute respiratory diseases including pneumonia, respiratory failure, etc., it might be fatal. Therefore, in order to stop the H5N1 illness from spreading, the afflicted birds were slaughtered.
