Why are plants obtained by protoplast culture called somatic hybrids?

Protoplast culture involves the fusion of two protoplasts from different plants. This is then allowed to produce a plant which has desirable characteristics from both plants. Since somatic cells are used for this purpose, hence such plants are called somatic hybrids.
