Explain the role of the mouth in the digestion of food.
Role of mouth in the digestion of food
1) Teeth help chew the food and increase the surface area of food to absorb enzymes.
2) The salivary glands in the mouth secret saliva which contains an enzyme called salivary amylase that digests the starch present in the food (chemical digestion).
3) The tongue helps in the thorough mixing of food with saliva.
