Assume the area of each small square is 1 square unit.

(i) Ratio of the area of the shaded portion to that of the whole figure in figure 1 
\frac{\text { Area of the shaded region }}{\text { Area of the whole figure }}=\frac{8 \text { square units }}{16 \text { square units }}=\frac{1}{2}=1: 2

(ii) Ratio of the area of the shaded portion to that of the whole figure in figure 2 

\frac{\text { Area of shaded portion }}{\text { Area of the whole figure }}=\frac{16 \text { square units }}{32 \text { square units }}=\frac{1}{2}=1: 2
