Solution:

Let the number be x, then

\begin{aligned} &y=x-x^{2} \\ &\frac{d y}{d x}=1-2 x \text { and } \frac{d^{2} y}{d x^{2}}=-2(<0) \\ &1-2 x=0 \\ &x=\frac{1}{2} \end{aligned}
